Surprising Satellite Remote Sensing Applications
In this blog post, I introduce some surprising applications of satellite remote sensing. Even if you're a long-time expert, you might see one or two new applications you haven't heard of. Did you know that SMOS helps preserving cave paintings or that whales are tracked using satellite imagery?
Also at BlueSky (again)
I have reactivated the account at BlueSky. When I first tried the platform, it was not very vivid, and the reactions were low. This has changed and no I'm active again.
Maybe you like to follow me here?

The Future of Copernicus Satellite Missions
Credit: ESA
With the UK's re-entry into the EU's Copernicus programme, funding has been secured to complete the development of all six next Copernicus missions. These missions include:
CO2M: Monitoring greenhouse gas emissions to track progress towards climate targets.
CIMR: Providing detailed insights into the polar environment, focusing on the Arctic.
CHIME: Supporting EU policies on natural resource management and food security through hyperspectral observations.
Cristal: Measuring sea-ice thickness, snow depth, and ice-sheet elevations to understand climate processes.
LSTM: Mapping land-surface temperature variations to improve agricultural productivity and water management.
ROSE-L: Offering high-resolution, all-weather radar observations for monitoring forests, land cover, and geohazards.
Extending IRIDE Constellation of EO Satellites
Credit: Argotec e OHB-Italia
Italy's IRIDE constellation of Earth observation satellites will be extended by 21 satellites. During the 75th International Astronautical Congress in Milan, ESA signed contracts with Argotec and Thales Alenia Space Italia (TASI) for the production of the second batch satellites. Argotec will deliver 15 satellites, while TASI will contribute six NIMBUS Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites. The combined value of these contracts exceeds €140 million. The IRIDE constellation aims to monitor environmental changes and support critical services in Italy.

Copernicus Browser updated
The CDSE Copernicus Browser has been update with new and enhanced features.
Themes and Highlights have been extended with new examples of interesting locations.
Short url-links can now be generated for the Compare mode. It is now possible to create a direct link to the comparison of multiple scenes.
Sentinel-1 mosaics have been extended to include data from January to August 2024. This will allow users to compare large-scale processes or create longer data series for machine learning.
