This week I wrote a new blog. It started as a distraction from my daily work. I wanted to do something different and it ended up in a video, an animation and this blog. It's about the project The Line. I recently stumbled across it again and thought it would be interesting to see what the current status is.

FDR4ALT - Innovative Data Records from Old Instruments
ESA released the Fundamental Data Records for Altimetry project - FDR4ALT. The new records, available in NetCDF format, are derived from the ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat Altimeter and Radiometer instruments. The data sets are to be used for the long-term utilisation of data on the various Earth surfaces: Ocean, coastal waters, inland waters, ice sheets, sea ice and atmosphere.
Swarm: 10 Success Stories in 10 Years
In this article, ESA highlights ten success stories of the Swarm mission that have been achieved in 10 years of being in orbit. This includes Swarm FAST data, Swarm’s Essential Planetary Variable, Swarm data in your smartphone and others.

The Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the world, disrupting ecosystems and attracting geo-economic interest due to navigable waters and natural resources.
The Copernicus Arctic Hub provides access to over 150 Earth Observation products for climate, ocean, land, and emergency issues in the Arctic.

HYPERNETS MDB from Sentinel data for the validation of satellite water products
The HYPERNETS project aims to develop a new, cost-effective hyperspectral radiometer called HYPSTAR, along with an associated pointing system and an embedded calibration device. Quality controlled data with uncertainty estimates are processed automatically by the HYPERNETS PROCESSOR, supporting the validation of all optical satellite missions.
Match-up Database (MDB) files for the validation of satellite water products from Sentinel-3 OLCI and Sentinel-2 MSI have recently been released.
Beyond EO
Extracting Gold from E-Waste, with Cheese
Scientist have developed a process which is able to extract gold from e-waste using cheese. More precisely they use, among other things, a protein fibre sponge that they produce from whey. Whey is a by-product of the cheese-making process.
According to the researchers, the cost of procuring the raw materials plus the energy cost of the entire process is 50 times less than the value of the gold that can be extracted from it.
