New NASA Earth Science
Video Wall at Smithsonian

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History Director Kirk Johnson introduced the new Earth Information Center exhibit. This exhibit, featuring a 32-foot-long video wall and interactive experiences, showcases Earth science data and visualizations. It aims to enhance public understanding of climate change and Earth’s interconnected systems. The exhibit, open to the public from October 8, 2024, will remain on display through 2028, providing valuable insights into our changing planet. A web version of the hyperwall is available at Earth Information Center
Dwell Precise Mode Provides ICEYE Data at 25 CM Resolution
Image: ICEYE
ICEYE has introduced Dwell Precise, a new imaging mode offering 25-centimeter resolution. This advancement builds on the Dwell Fine mode released earlier in 2024 and utilizes ICEYE’s 1200 MHz radar bandwidth. Dwell Precise enhances the ability to identify smaller objects, such as specific vehicle types without additional intelligence sources. This innovation underscores ICEYE’s commitment to advancing Earth Observation capabilities for both private and public sector clients.
Old Sentinel-2 Processing Baselines to be Deleted
The Sentinel-2 Collection-1 products, reprocessed with the new 30 m Copernicus Digital Elevation Model (DEM), are now fully available in the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE). These products offer improved geolocation performance, especially in mountainous areas. The older baseline data, with sensing dates up to December 31, 2021, will be removed starting October 24, with completion expected by November 15. Users are encouraged to utilize the enhanced Collection-1 data for better accuracy and performance.

In September, 20 new plugins were added or updated to the QGIS plugin repository, enhancing the platform’s capabilities for geospatial analysis. Notable additions include IntelliGeo, which integrates AI for generating PyQGIS code or graphical models via a chat interface, and TreeEyed, designed for tree monitoring using high-resolution imagery. Other plugins cover a range of functionalities from network analysis to topographic map generation, further solidifying QGIS as a versatile tool for geospatial professionals.
