Sustainable Satellite Operations
What if satellites could be repaired, refuelled, or upgraded while in orbit? This is the vision of In-Orbit Servicing (IOS), a new field of space exploration that could revolutionise the way satellites are designed and operated1. ESA has been leading the way in IOS research, collaborating with industry partners to develop Europe’s first IOS missions2. Find out how these missions could extend the life and capabilities of satellites in low-Earth orbit and geostationary orbit, and what challenges and opportunities lie ahead for IOS in the near future. New ESA Earth Observation Science Strategy
ESA is developing a new Earth observation science strategy to address the complex and urgent challenges facing our planet, such as climate change, natural disasters, and food and water security. The strategy will focus more on understanding the Earth as a system, using the latest advances in technology, data analytics and modelling.
BiDS - Big Data from Space 2023
The 6th BiDS conference takes place in Vienna from the 6th to the 9th of July. During the event there are 7 main topics discussed:
Big data-driven transformation in policy and society
Cross-domain applications
Ethics, equity, and trust in Big Data driven policies
Cloud-native and digital innovation
New processing paradigms exploiting multi-source data
New methods and technologies for enabling foresight
Disruptive technologies
This takes place in Birds of a Feather sessions, Lightning talks, Exhibitions and Demos, Hackathons and a Pangeo Code Sprint.
Participation is free of charge and registration will open on September 14th.
Registration for FRINGE 2023 is Open
Registration is open for the 12th International Workshop on “Advances in the Science and Applications of SAR Interferometry and Sentinel-1 InSAR” - FRINGE 2023
Sentinel-3 World Fire Atlas Published
The Sentinel-3 World Fire Atlas has been developed by the European Space Agency processing the Sentinel-3A SLSTR Level 1b data containing two dedicated channels (F1 and F2) for fire and high temperature events at global scale during night-time.
Software Updates
SMOS Tools updates
Two SMOS related tools have been released.
The new Matlab library (RWAPI / SMOSRWLib) to read and write SMOS products and auxiliary files is available.
The SMOS Data Viewer is available in an updated version. The Data Viewer provides a quick and easy way to view SMOS products and auxiliary files used for Level 1 and 2 product generation. The new version offers improved visualisation functionality for AUX_OTT, AUX_DTBXY and AUX_SSS auxiliary files.
